Post Christmas Spike in Divorce Enquiries
07-01-2013 | Resource'Tis the season to be jolly? Maybe only on the surface. The harsh reality is that many couples stay together for the festive season then separate in the New Year.
Every year, lawyers in Australia and overseas report an increase in enquiries regarding divorce following the Christmas period. In fact in the UK a couple of years ago, one large law firm even offered gift vouchers for family law advice that could be given as Christmas presents!
Obviously that is taking things too far, but the fact is more people make family law enquiries in the New Year. This can usually be put down to the following reasons:
- parents decide to stay together for the children's sake so as not to "spoil Christmas"
- couples who are having difficulties already have to spend increased time together at home during the festive season which results in even greater tensions
- the financial burdens and pressures of Christmas itself result in more conflict and tension.
